Beards Chasing Championships

Is is just me? Or, is there a number of National Basketball Association (NBA) players in the playoffs this season wearing beards? Beard styles have been in fashion for numerous male athletes across many professional sports. In the National Hockey League, there is a tradition called playoffs beards. During the NHL playoffs, players started to grow beards as a bonding exercise, and no team member shaves their beard until the team is eliminated. This tradition is believed to have originated in the 1980’s with the New York Islanders.

The hot ticket and must watch is the NBA playoffs. Now that the western and eastern conference of the NBA playoffs are in full swing, the starting lineups are inundated with beards. From Lebron James in the east to Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, and James Harden in the west, the battle of the beards is electrifying. It’s interesting to see some professional athletes not only intensify their level of play in the quest for a championship ring, but also enhance their personal grooming style too.

The NBA has never been short of great players who were beard bearing champions. Greats players like Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, James Worthy, Bill Walton, and Tim Duncan were among a few of the greats who hoisted the championship trophies in the air and rocked some awesome man manes. There are a few honorable mention NBA players who were great bearded players but never won championships like Karl Malone. Beards chasing championships still has a presence today. Who would have fathomed a player with the nickname “The Beard” like James Hardin would be among the NBA scoring leaders. You can walk into the Toyota Center on game day and  see hundreds of fans wearing costume beards.

No matter what your sports team or your favorite player, the probability that you will see a beard in competitive play is high. The next NBA playoff game you watch count the number of players that take the floor with a beard. The NBA and other professional sports leagues display some incredible male athletes who bring style to the game too. In my opinion, the bearded guys compliment their moxie with their man manes.
